Collection: Damsel

Damsel fish may be small but they’ve got attitude! These little guys bring a lot of energy to a saltwater aquarium and are tough as nails. Whether you want a splash of electric blue, bright yellow or black and white, damsels have a look for every tank. Just be prepared – these fish aren’t afraid to stand their ground!

Damsels are very common in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The average size of most Damselfish is less than 3 inches. They come in a variety of colors and are tough. They are often used to break in or cycle new aquariums. The majority of these fish are highly territorial, and may become aggressive toward other tankmates, although they typically do well in groups of the same species. They will stand their ground and protect their spot in the tank at all costs. In most circumstances it's best to only have one to an aquarium.

Popular Damsel Fish Varieties

Blue Chromis
These guys are fast, flashy, and always in motion. The Blue Chromis (Chromis cyanea) brings nonstop energy and a shimmer of electric blue to your tank. Peaceful by damsel standards, they do great in groups and are one of the most commonly stocked options we carry.

Bicolor Damsel
With a striking split of royal blue and sunshine yellow, the Bicolor Damsel (Pomacentrus auriventris) doesn’t just look cool—it holds its own. These fish are hardy, a bit feisty, and a popular pick for tanks that need a little bold color and a fish that’s not afraid to show up.

Beau Gregory Damsel
This tough little beauty (Stegastes leucostictus) sports blue tones with a personality to match. They're a frequent find in our shop, and while small, they’re known to claim their space—so choose tank mates wisely. Great for aquarists who like a little spice in their setup.

Caring for Your Damsel Fish

Damsels are tough, low-maintenance fish, but a good setup will keep them thriving.

  • Diet: Omnivores that eat just about anything—flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp are all on the menu.
  • Tank Mates: They can be territorial, so avoid overly passive fish. Adding them last to an established tank can help minimize aggression.
  • Tank Setup: Plenty of live rock and hiding spots will help keep the peace and give them places to claim as their own.

Damsels bring nonstop action and personality to any tank. Check out our collection and find the right one to liven up your aquarium!
