Red Mangrove Plants / Propagule
Red mangrove plants have become popular recently with many aquarists trying to recreate the natural environment as much as possible. Their scientific name is Rhizophora mangle. Red Mangrove grow in Florida Mangroves near the coast. These mangrove are not seeds these are call propagule and are reddish brown in appearance. They measure anywhere from 5 to 10 inches in length. These will root to sand or live rock. They require illumination which can be provided either directly from florescent lighting that has a light spectrum of 6000°-8000°K.
Red mangrove plants are perfect for lowering nitrates and phosphates in your tank and get their nutrients directly from the water. They require minimal care, just wipe of any excess salt and nutrients that they will excrete from their leaves. Also don't let dead leaves decay in the tank. Once plants take root, they will grow fairly well and can be trimmed at the tips to keep growth under control. Keep them healthy by adding iron supplements and trace elements on a regular basis.
